Winter paw care for New York City dogs

The short answer
Wipe your dog’s paws after every winter walk, keep the fur between the pads trimmed, and consider paw balm or booties on salted sidewalks.
Why winter is tough on paws
De-icing salt and chemicals can dry and crack paw pads, and dogs may lick the residue off later. Ice and packed snow can also collect between the toes.
A simple after-walk routine
- Wipe each paw with a damp cloth or pet wipe.
- Check between the toes for ice balls or salt.
- Dry the paws fully.
- Apply paw balm if pads look dry.
Grooming helps
Ask your groomer to trim the fur between the pads. Shorter fur collects less ice and salt.
When to see a vet
Bleeding, swelling, limping or constant licking can signal an injury or irritation that needs a vet.

Is rock salt bad for dogs’ paws?
It can dry and irritate paw pads, and dogs may lick it off. Wiping paws after walks helps.
Do dogs need boots in NYC winters?
Not always, but booties help on heavily salted sidewalks, especially for dogs with sensitive paws.
