How to compare pet insurance plans
Plans that look alike can pay out very differently. Compare these points before you choose.
| Compare | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Reimbursement rate | The share of each covered bill you get back |
| Deductible | What you pay before coverage starts, and whether it is annual or per condition |
| Annual limit | The most the plan pays each year; low limits can run out fast in NYC |
| Waiting periods | How long until accidents, illnesses and orthopedic conditions are covered |
| Exam fees | Whether the vet’s exam fee is reimbursed, not just treatment |
| Hereditary and chronic conditions | Whether breed-related and ongoing conditions are covered |
| Exclusions | What is never covered, including pre-existing conditions |
| Price increases with age | How premiums change as your pet gets older |
| Claims process | How you file, how fast you are paid, and whether direct vet payment exists |
